5 Reasons to Vote YES on 2
Got two minutes? Here are the basics:
1. It bans foreign government-owned entities from spending money to influence Maine elections.
In 2021, foreign government-owned entities spent $22 million to influence Maine elections. This measure would close a loophole that allows for this kind of spending in our elections.
2. Over 80,000 Mainers signed to get YES on 2 on the ballot.
Thanks to a strong grassroots network of volunteers, question 2 is on the ballot because thousands of Maine voters agreed that we need to take action to stop limitless election spending.
3. It already passed with overwhelming support in the legislature.
This measure passed through the legislature with support from both parties. Despite this, the governor vetoed the bill and it narrowly failed a veto-override vote.
4. And it’s broadly popular with voters, too.
A recent poll indicates that YES on 2 is popular regardless of political affiliation. A whopping 82% of voters polled supported the measure.
5. It’s a meaningful step Maine voters can take to fight against money in politics.
One provision of the initiative includes accountability mechanisms for Maine’s congressional delegation to advocate for an anti-corruption amendment to the U.S. Constitution. You can read more about the anti-corruption aspects of the measure here.
